Window Replacement: Blinds, Drapes or Curtains?

Window treatments will add interior value and utility to your new hardware. Another problem presents itself though, and that’s how to pick between the three most common choices: blinds, drapes or curtains.

Window Replacement: Blinds, Drapes or Curtains?

Renewal by Andersen® of San Francisco discusses which to pick in this post.

Curtains

These are panels of fabric that hang from a rod. They come in a wide range of fabrics, colors and patterns to choose from and are usually the best choice if you want a covering that serves as a decorative feature in the room as well.

Keep in mind that, while they are adequate at keeping your rooms private, they still let a small amount of light in. This is why curtains are often paired with another window covering. That said, we recommend this for your replacement windows if you want to add some extra detail and decor in your room.

Drapes

Like curtains, drapes are also fabric panels and are sold in pairs. The difference between the two is that the drapes are lined with heavy fabric that is usually enough to block out the sunlight completely. They are also often long enough to reach the floor and usually “pool” beneath the window.

Keep in mind that while draperies block out enough sun, the fabrics are often heavy and stiff. This adds extra weight in a room, and we don’t advise it for smaller spaces as it can make the area appear stuffier than usual.

Blinds

These covers use a cord mechanism and are made with non-fabric materials like wood, bamboo, aluminum and vinyl. Since they are flush to the window, they are the best choice for small windows or any room where you don’t want to add any extra decor. Blinds have a more modern and minimalist look to them, which is why they are most commonly used in conjunction with sliding windows.
