Windows are a major part of your home’s thermal coverings. This means that, during winter, your windows are designed to keep warm air inside and cold air outside. Sealing your windows for the winter will stop drafts from oozing into your home. Further, it would save you on heating costs.
Importance of Proper Seals
Did you know that drafty windows and doors are the causes of almost 40% of your home’s heat loss?
The amount of heat possibly escaping through your drafty windows in the winter is the same amount that would outflow if a window is left wide open year round.
While you do want to buy the best windows, if they are not insulated or fitted appropriately, they will not perform their job. In fact, they will not:
How to Properly Add Seals to Your Windows
While it is vital to note that not every house is the same, generally speaking, the following guidelines are a good start:
If the space you need to protect is less than an inch – you should add a slightly expanding foam (slow-expanding urethane foam or closed cell foam).
If the space you need to protect is more than an inch – the space should be protected with fiberglass. It must be noted that the fiberglass should not be flattened when installed since it won’t properly if it is compressed or squeezed. This would leave exposed paths for air to flow, which would defeat its purpose.
You must use just the right amount of insulation. Too much insulation would pack these spaces too tightly. All houses and products enlarge and contract, so an allowance is needed for this natural movement.
