The Quick Guide to Window Terminology for Your Cincinnati Home

A window is made up of many different parts. Not only do you need to understand what each part does when you are selecting windows, you should also get familiar with common styles of windows as well. This guide is your go-to resource for all of the window terminology you need to know while you’re shopping for windows in Cincinnati.

Types of Windows

There are many different styles of windows to choose from. First we will talk about the types of windows available so you can see how they work before we talk about individual components.

  • Stationary or Fixed Windows
Windows that can’t be opened. Often used for decorative windows that do not need to be functional.
  • Single-Hung Windows
Windows with only one moving sash, usually on the bottom.
  • Double-Hung Windows
A window with two movable sashes, top and bottom.
  • French Casement Windows
Windows where both the left and the right panels swing outward similar to French doors.
  • Hopper Window
Commonly used above doors or windows to allow ventilation. The top of the window swings inward.
  • Awning Window
A small window where the bottom of the window swings outward.

Parts of a Window

Now that you are familiar with the different types of windows available, it is time to learn more about the parts of the windows themselves.

  • Sash
The sash is the movable part of the window that supports the glass. It is a frame that fits inside of the rails, allowing for easy movement.
  • Casing

This is what we commonly think of as the window frame. It is between the sash and the wall, and is usually covered with some sort of finishing material like moulding.
  • Sill or Stool
The bottom ledge of the window that typically protrudes out into the room and forms a shelf.
  • Jambs
The jambs specifically are the vertical parts of the window frame which the rails are attached to.
  • Sash Lock
Modern windows feature a locking mechanism on the sash for increased home security.
  • Operator
The mechanical crank used to open an awning or hopper window, and some other window styles.
  • Grilles
     Decorative elements
added to the glass to break up a window pane into smaller segments.
  • Screens

On the exterior of your window, used to keep bugs and debris out when you have the windows open.

These are the major components of your new windows. Not all windows have every component. The terminology used will vary from window to window as you select options.
