Being a homeowner is incredible rewarding but also very taxing. You have to worry about utility maintenance, yard work, safety, and so much more. If you’re new to being a homeowner, things might seem a bit overwhelming; knowing this, here are a few things every homeowner should know.
Know Where You Can Dig – Ready to boost your landscaping with a few saplings? Always dreamed of having a koi pond in the front yard? Before you start digging holes and tearing up the backyard for an in-ground pool, make sure you check with your utility supplier. You want to make sure you won’t be digging into underground plumbing systems. To check with your utility provider, call “811 Before You Dig” or just contact them directly. They’ll send someone out to mark the places you shouldn’t be digging.
Gutters – Many homeowners don’t understand how crucial rain gutters are. Not only do they keep run off from eroding the property around your home, but they also protect your foundation. Many homeowners who find mold and cracked basements are shocked to learn that the problem could have been avoided if they had a gutter system. If you have gutters, make sure you keep them clean. Clogged gutters can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other vermin.
Washing Windows – If you don’t know how to properly wash windows, listen up. Window washing is incredibly important, as dirty windows can make an otherwise clean home look unkempt. If you’re tired of streaks, trade paper towels for newspapers. Newspapers don’t break apart or leave streaks and have been used for by professional window washers for years. Regular window cleaner works great with newspaper, but you can also use a vinegar solution. Don’t forget to wash your screens, too, as pollen and dirt can clog up those tiny pores. Take them outside and hose them off. You can sud them up with dish soap and water but don’t scrub them too hard; you don’t want to rip them.
