You can reduce your power bill this fall by maximizing natural lighting. However, foggy windows can reduce the amount of sunlight entering your home. The windows contractors at Renewal By Andersen® of Long Island shares some window-cleaning tips below.
Clean Your Windows on Cloudy Days
Water streaks can form on the window glass if the sun dries them before you wipe them off. To avoid hard-to-remove streaks, only wash your windows on a cloudy day.
Line Window Sills With Pieces of Cloth
If you’re using premade cleaning solutions, make sure to line your window sills and floors with rags. The chemicals in these solutions might stain or even damage hardwood floors, not to mention leave behind residue on the glass.
It would also be a good idea to check the window manufacturer’s guide on what solution would be safe to use. If you’re not sure, vinegar or detergent solution is always a safe bet.
Use a Microfiber Cloth
Avoid using paper towels and newspapers—the ink from the paper can stain the glass. Use lint-free cloths instead. Make sure to wipe the glass from the top down and side to side.
Clean the Window Tracks Using a Soft Brush
Don’t forget to clean the window tracks and frame. Left unattended, grime can accumulate the tracks and make it harder for you to open them. If you haven’t cleaned your window’s tracks—or maintained other parts of your window—for a long time, you may need replacement windows. Irregular maintenance is the common culprit behind window leaks, after all.
Having doubts about your window’s condition? Have a contractor inspect them.
