It’s always a good idea to get a head start on your spring cleaning. Keep in mind that sloppy window maintenance is just as bad as neglecting to clean or maintain your windows at all. That’s why it’s important to read the window manufacturer’s manual before cleaning your windows. They usually include specific cleaning instructions and tips.
To help you get started on your window spring cleaning, Renewal by Andersen® of New Jersey shared some quick tips in this guide.
Using the right tools can make window-cleaning a lot easier. For instance, instead of using just one squeegee, use two—one for each side of your window—to avoid cross-contamination. And if you’re cleaning tall windows or a large bow and bay window, you can get the job done faster using squeegees with long handles.
Avoid cleaning your windows on sunny days. If the cleaning solution residue on the glass panes dries up before you can wipe them off, hard-to-remove white streaks will start to form on the glass.
It’s best to use a mild cleaning solution made from dishwashing soap. For tougher stains, you can use a commercial cleaner. But if you’re using a mild dishwashing solution, you should only use distilled water. Otherwise, white streaks will form on the window glass.
Don’t forget to vacuum the tracks of your sliding windows and lubricate their rollers to make sure they run smoothly.
Keep in mind that routine window maintenance can only do so much. If your windows are starting to look a bit worn-out, you might want to consider getting new windows.
Windows have an average lifespan of 20 to 25 years, although this may vary depending on the material, the climate, and how well it has been maintained. In general, if your windows are more than 20 years old and there’s a spike in your electricity bill, it’s recommended that you install a new window replacement.
