Our Environmental Commitment Part 1 The Top 5 Challenges

Part 1: The Top 5 Challenges

At Renewal by Andersen®, we are proud to be the first window manufacturer to have received the Green Seal Certification for Environmental Stewardship, along with our parent company Andersen® Corporation. This reflects our long-standing commitment to helping the environment, which has carried over to our replacement windows and patio doors.

Our Environmental Commitment Part 1 The Top 5 Challenges
In this two-part blog, we discuss our environmental commitment, starting with our answers to the five environmental challenges we face today.

  1. Renewing Existing Housing – According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average home uses more energy than it did in the past. It’s also responsible for more carbon emissions than the average automobile. By upgrading to energy-efficient windows and doors, you can significantly reduce your monthly energy consumption, and consequently your home’s carbon footprint, all without making major changes to your home.

  2. Indoor Air Quality – The EPA considers poor indoor quality to be one of today’s top five health hazards. This is mostly due to volatile organic compounds and other particulates emitted from common household items like paint and plastics, sometimes years after they were installed. Most people spend 90% of their time indoors, which makes everyone susceptible to the effects of bad IAQ. Our replacement windows and patio doors are the only products today with the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) Indoor Advantage Gold™ certification.

  3. Smart Use of Materials – Reclaiming and reusing materials has always been a requirement for our manufacturing processes. For instance, our Fibrex® material window replacement frames contain 40% wood fiber by weight, reclaimed from Andersen Corporation’s wood manufacturing facilities. Also, our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass contains at least 12% reclaimed glass by weight.
  4. Energy Efficiency – The Department of Energy estimates that as much as 40% of an average home’s monthly energy consumption is due to heat loss. Renewal by Andersen replacement windows and patio doors are made with energy-efficient materials, with features that help minimize heat loss and cut heating and cooling requirements.

  5. Long Product Lifecycles – In addition to letting you enjoy the benefits of your new windows for a long time, our replacement windows’ long lifecycles also help minimize landfill space that would otherwise have been occupied by disposed-of windows. And of course, less frequent window replacements mean more savings over time. Our replacement windows are backed by the strongest Limited Warranties in the business so you can enjoy your windows longer.

Part 2: Our Partnerships

Modern window replacement and patio door products come with small white labels that indicate window performance ratings. These ratings are certifications from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), a nonprofit organization that has developed this standardized, accurate and credible fenestration performance rating system. Renewal by Andersen replacement windows and patio doors are rated by the NFRC and bear these labels.

ENERGY STAR®

You may already be familiar with ENERGY STAR labels, as they are affixed to anything from computers to home exterior components. ENERGY STAR is a labeling partnership founded by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency. Renewal by Andersen products meet or exceed ENERGY STAR criteria for energy efficiency and minimal carbon emissions.

Environmental Protection Agency

Together with our parent company Andersen Corporation, we support and participate in the EPA’s projects. One of these projects is Project XL (“eXcellence and Leadership”), a national pilot program that allowed various organizations to develop innovative strategies for testing better ways of achieving environmental and public health protection. These innovations trickle down to the energy efficiency and low-emission benefits of every bow and bay window we’ve ever built.

Green Building Council

The Green Building Council is perhaps best known for creating the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a certification program that recognizes properties that excel in material and resource conservation, energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality. Renewal by Andersen replacement windows and patio doors are optimized for all three aspects and have since been installed in LEED-certified residential and commercial properties.

Alliance to Save Energy

The Alliance to Save Energy, of which Andersen Corporation is a member, is the foremost energy efficiency coalition in the United States. Their main advocacy is in promoting products that enhance energy efficiency. This ultimately helps individuals and businesses achieve energy cost savings and better energy security.

Our commitment to providing the most beautiful, durable and energy-efficient products is reflected in every sliding window and patio door we build.
