Making the Most of Corner Windows in Michigan

Does your Michigan home have corner windows in the living room, dining room, or master bedroom? These windows could be a true focal point and element of beauty in your home if you design and use them properly. Don’t let your corner windows go to waste — follow these tips to make the most of this unique decor element.

Stay away from grilles.

Grilles can look lovely on certain windows, but they’re not a good choice for corner windows. Grilles can obstruct the view somewhat, and chances are, the corner windows in your home were placed to allow a gorgeous view of certain landscaping or natural elements. Two plain-glass windows will allow you the clearest view. Even if you have grilles elsewhere in your home, leaving them off the corner windows will help make those windows stand out.

Choose windows with thinner frames and sashes.

With corner windows, you can bask in the sunshine throughout the day; it will come in one window in the morning, and the other later in the afternoon. To maximize the amount of sunshine the windows capture, you want to choose windows with a thinner frame and sashes. Fibrex® frames and sashes are a great choice. Since Fibrex is so much stronger than vinyl and wood, Fibrex frames can be made thinner while still offering the glass portion of the window plenty of support. Plus, Fibrex comes in an array of lovely colors, so you can make your corner windows match the rest of your decor.

Consider increasing the window height.

If you need to have your windows replaced anyway, you might want to have your window installation technician extend the height of the window openings in the process. This can allow for more of a view out the window. You want to be able to stand in front of the window and stare out across the landscape without having to bend down or bow your head.

Opt for casement windows for better ventilation.

Corner windows can offer excellent ventilation since you can capture a breeze from two different directions. To allow even more fresh air inside, consider placing casement windows in these two window openings. Because they hinge open like doors, casement windows are good at catching cross-breezes and funneling them into homes. With a pair of casement windows, you may be able to reduce your reliance on air conditioning in the spring and fall, saving yourself some money in on energy.

Choose minimal window treatments.

Try to avoid choosing overly large and cumbersome window treatments for your corner windows. You want the windows, not the window treatments, to be the center of attention. Heavy insulating curtains and thick shutters have their place, but not here. Sheer curtains or simple blinds are often your best choice. You can close them for some privacy when needed, but they won’t get in the way of sunshine or fresh air when you open them. Choose window treatments that coordinate with the color of the window frames to create a coordinated look for your Michigan home.
