Windows can freeze during the winter season, which can lead to long-term damage and even become a safety hazard. Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to keep your windows from freezing in the winter season. In today’s post, Renewal by Andersen® of Long Island shares tips that can help prevent your windows from freezing.
Most households would be running a humidifier to compensate for the dry air during the winter season. Condensation on the windows indicate high relative indoor humidity levels, which is harmless in itself but the droplets may freeze and cause damage to the windows. You will want to control how much moisture is spread in your home by adjusting your humidifier settings, as well as turning on the kitchen range hood and bathroom exhaust fan when using these areas.
Also, keep an eye on how condensation forms on the window glass. If you find condensation between the interior and exterior glass panels, this means the window seals have failed and you may need to get replacement windows soon.
Inspect your windows regularly and keep an eye out for worn-out weatherstripping and caulk, both of which are essential to maintaining the seals around the windows. Most types of windows have weatherstripping made of rubber that is user-replaceable. If your windows have weatherstripping that’s made of metal, you will need your window contractor to do it for you. Old caulking can be scraped off and replaced. If you have not done this before, you’ll want to get some practice first to make sure you’ll apply it evenly.
If ice finds its way on your windows, treat it with a de-icer. Spray it onto the affected spots and wait a few minutes for the ice to melt. If you don’t have a de-icer, prepare a solution that’s three parts water, seven parts isopropyl alcohol, and a few drops of dish detergent.
