Unfortunately, many of us live near noisy neighbors or streets that can be easily heard inside our homes. These noises are not only an annoyance, they also can affect our health by not allowing us to relax, as well as increase our stress.
To block noise from these sources, you have to prevent the sound waves that carry the noise from its source into your home. The easiest way to block these sound waves is to create a barrier between you and the source.
Block Noise with a Fence
A fence is one of the fastest and easiest ways to block noise from getting into your home. However, it may not be the prettiest object to look at from your window or least expensive way to get a barrier up. You just have to decide if blocking the noise is worth the price and effort it will take to get a fence in place.
Block Noise with Landscaping
A better looking way to block noise is to plant a “living wall”. A “living wall” is just a wall created from living plants. These types of walls can take many, many years to establish to a decent enough height to block out enough noise to make it worth the trouble.
A “living wall” also may not work at all if the owners do not take care of the plants and remember to water them.
Once a “living wall” is in place though, and has grown to the height and thickness it should be, it can block out noise as well as any fence; and it is much nicer to look at.
Block Noise with Better Windows
Thin, single-paned or old, leaky windows do nothing to block noise from coming into your home. Having a window in your home like one of these, is almost like having nothing there at all. More than likely, if you have one of these types of windows you have more problems than just not being able to block noise from the outside.
To block noise from coming in from the outside, you will need new windows. The best choice to block noise from the outside is to install energy-efficient windows. These types of windows are specifically designed to block the heat and cold from getting into your home; but as an added bonus, they also can block noise from most sources from getting in as well.
