As we are heading into the Christmas season many of us are getting ready to start decorating our windows for the holiday. Before you start though, we thought it would be a good idea to offer a window safety list of the things you should and should avoid doing while decorating.
- Never place lit candles on a window sill, edge or sash. This is just asking for a holiday fire, and not one of the good ones.
- Use suction cup hooks to hang items in the window. This will cut down the damage caused by staples, nails, and screws. Suction cup hooks are also more stable and easier to remove from the glass than tape.
- Take full advantage of your curtain rods as a place to hang holiday decorations from.
- Do not place real pine branches in the window sill without something under them. The sap from the pine branches can leave stains behind that are terrible to try and clean up.
- Fake snow is fun to use, but before you start spraying, cover the non-glass areas. This will save you the hassle of a post spray clean up and will prevent the fake snow from making it hard to actually use your window during the holidays.
- Only decorate your windows with items that will still allow you to easily open and close them, just in case of an emergency.
- When decorating the outside of your windows, attach the decorations to the siding and not to the windows themselves.
- Use a safe ladder and not a chair when hanging items in the window that you can’t reach. If you must use a chair, use a stable one and not one that has wheels.
There are many other safety suggestions for window decorating we could add to this list, but these 8 are the primary ones that you should take heed of to help your windows survive the holidays.
