Christmas doesn’t have to be gaudy and full of Christmas decorations just for the sake of Christmas decorations. There is a way to do Christmas with elegance and refinement. You just need to be selective in the materials you choose, not unlike you already do with your normal everyday décor.
Lace Christmas Window Treatments
Lace is a material that always adds a touch of elegance to anything it is decorated with. For your Christmas window treatment, you want to look for lace that has snowflake patterns in it. If you can’t find specific curtains or even lace material with the snowflake pattern that you can sew in to curtains, then you may have to think outside the box.
Look for rectangle lace Christmas tablecloths instead, as these are more prevalent than the curtains and are more likely to have the pattern you are looking for in them. You can also purchase crocheted snowflakes and sew them to regular lace curtains.
The nice thing about these snowflake lace curtains are that they can be left up for the whole winter and aren’t restricted to only being used during the Christmas season.
Changing Current Curtains in to Elegant Christmas Window Treatments
If you already have a set of elegant curtains up and you have no desire to change them out for different curtains just for the Christmas season, you can always add to the existing curtains.
First, you can add Christmas details to the curtain itself. Take beautiful 2-3 inch wide ribbon and attach varying lengths of it from the top of the curtain with safety pins or sewing pins, the ribbon will be hanging down in individual strands from one end of the curtain to the other. You will not want to sew them in the curtains as this is just going to be a temporary detail for the Christmas season.
At the end of each ribbon attach a flat, unbreakable ornament or a fabric snowflake. Whatever you choose should not stick out very far from the ribbon and should not be heavy. The point is to add a detail to the curtain itself, not create a different window decoration all together. Also by choosing items that are light and flat, you will have an easier time opening and closing the curtain.
Another idea to make an elegant window treatment is to use an elegant curtain tieback, such as a wire or clear glass beads or Victorian Christmas garland.
