A sliding door is a good asset. After all, if you pick a quality door, it can last for years to come while improving your home’s overall aesthetic appeal at the same time. However, as sliding doors rely on an upper and lower track and rollers to keep it in place and operate it, it’s also vital that you properly maintain your sliding door.
Here’s a step-by-step guide that can help you properly maintain your sliding door.
Before you apply any kind of lubrication to your sliding door, make sure to clean the tracks first. To accomplish this, you can use a vacuum on the tracks to remove hair, insects, stones or any other kind of debris that can impede the trackway. If there are clumps of dirt, consider using an old toothbrush to break them up first before you start vacuuming.
After you’ve cleaned the tracks, check and adjust the rollers as well. If you notice that your sliding door seems to be hitting bumps as it’s being opened or closed, it’s possible that one of the lower roller wheels is broken and will have to be replaced before the door can be lubricated. Meanwhile, if the door grinds on the lower track when it’s being moved, the roller will have to be adjusted lower. To accomplish this, simply turn the adjusting screw at the bottom of the door counterclockwise to lower the wheel and the door.
However, if you aren’t confident about replacing the rollers or adjusting the door on your own, you can alway enlist the services of window and door maintenance expert Renewal by Andersen® of San Francisco.
Once the tracks are clean, and the rollers are adjusted, spray lubricant on the tracks and wheels to make it work better. If you clean your sliding door tracks and rollers regularly, choose a petroleum-based lubricant. However, if you don’t use the sliding doors very often, then a silicon-based lubricant should suffice.
