9 Window Safety Tips for Your Family in New Jersey & New York

As a replacement window dealer in the New Jersey and New York Metro region, Renewal by Andersen has a responsibility to make sure our friends and neighbors know how to use their home windows safely, even if they choose to buy their home improvement products elsewhere.

While we hope you’ll allow us to help you update your home with high-performance replacement windows and patio doors, we are dedicating this week’s post to home window safety because we know that well-informed people make better decisions, and when it comes to safety, wise decisions are necessary to protect your family.

Did You Know ….

More than 3,000 children under the age of five end up in the emergency room each year because they either fell through a window or had an injury-causing encounter with a window. Sadly, according to Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the United States, about eight children in this same age group die annually due to a window-related accident.

While it is not easy to accurately determine exactly how many of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented, CPSC officials encourage parents and care-givers to take measures to improve home safety.

Before you finalize plans to update your home with Energy Star certified replacement windows and patio doors, let your replacement window specialist know if there are young children, people with mobility issues or elderly residents living in your home. Your consultant can help you choose styles with safety features “baked in at the factory,” as well has accessories that boost safety and security.

Review the following tips for keeping the most vulnerable family members safe in your home.

9 Safety Tips for Replacement Window Owners

These nine tips apply to ALL home windows, but especially windows in rooms occupied by the very young, aged and disabled.

  1. Whenever possible, install windows that open from the top down – such as double-hung windows.
  2. Install window guards that prevent windows from opening more than 4 inches.
  3. Remember, insects are designed to prevent airborne pollutants and insects from coming inside the home. No window screen is strong enough to prevent a human – even a small one – from falling through an open window.
  4. Arrange furniture away from windows. This tip ensures safe egress during an emergency, and prevents small children from climbing a piece of furniture to access the window.
  5. Never leave small children, or those with mental conditions that prevent them from making wise decisions, unsupervised.
  6. Install safety locks to prevent unwanted access from indoors and outdoors.
  7. Think about your window coverings. Dangling cords present safety hazards for children and pets.
  8. Before opening any window, take a few seconds to consider the safety of you and your family. A few seconds may save the life of someone you love.
  9. If your windows have keyed locks, develop an emergency exit plan, and assign an adult family member to assume responsibility for retrieving the key and unlocking appropriate windows during an emergency.
