5 Long Island Replacement Windows Questions Answered

Not all Long Island replacement windows are created equal. Even within the same brand, residents on Long Island will find that some home windows perform better in different environments. When you’re considering different brands, styles and components, it is natural to have some questions.

Here are five questions – and answers – that will help you choose the right style and components to get the highest performance and return on investment from your replacement windows and patio doors.

Question #1: I have one large window in my bathroom. I love the amount of natural light that floods into the small space, but frankly, the view is less than inspiring. And, I would prefer to get rid of the heavy curtains I currently use for privacy. Any suggestions?

Answer: It is important to make sure you can ventilate small, humid spaces. The good news is, you don’t have to settle for only one window, or keep those unsightly curtains to maintain privacy. It’s possible to create a window unit by combining different styles and glass types. For example, you may opt for a fixed window with patterned glass for the majority of the glass surface and meld a clear awning window above the large lower portion. This would obscure the view without totally blocking those beautiful rays. Alternatively, you could leave the upper portion without any window treatment or choose a lighter fabric. Or, you could use all patterned glass.

Question #2: I have several north facing windows that occasionally develop heavy condensation. Can I eliminate the buildup with a particular type or style of window?

Answer: Even high-quality replacement windows can develop condensation if your indoor relative humidity is too high. We previously explained how to lower humidity levels to prevent moisture problems with modern windows. However, if you’re thinking about installing new windows, and you’re looking for an option to improve energy-efficiency, especially during cold weather, consider Low-E/Low-E4 glass designed to take advantage of solar heat gain during our frigid winter months here in Long Island.

Question #3: We recently updated our home furnishings, now we’re thinking about upgrading our windows. Is there really a window that can help protect upholstery and artwork?

Answer: Yes. One of the primary reasons that upholstery fads and begins to break down in a few short years is that the sun naturally emits UV rays that fry your skin and damage your interior furnishings. Fortunately, modern technology allows us to block almost all (95%) of those harmful rays to protect your investments. Ask your replacement window consultant about the benefits of SmartSun™ Glass versus Sun Glass, which has a slight tint to shield your interior fixtures without significantly reducing light levels.

Question #4: Currently, all windows in our home are double-hung windows, with the exception of a few small awning windows in the basement and bathrooms. Do I have to replace all of the windows with the same style?

Answer: Absolutely not! In fact, one of the many advantages of replacement windows and patio doors over new construction and off-the-shelf varieties is the flexibility to go back with any style window. Since we build each window to exacting measurements, your new windows will fit the opening left when we remove the existing windows. This means you can choose any of the styles available, including traditional single-hung windows, casements, fixed windows and even custom-configurations like bays and bows. Your imagination is the only limiting factor when it comes to design your upgrades.

Question #5: Is it true that frame materials are as important as glass options when it comes to enhancing energy-efficiency and performance.

Answer: Every component from the frame and glass to the quality of weather stripping and sealants that join two panels of glass to keep insulating gas contained will ultimately impact how well your windows perform and how long they last. For instance, Fibrex frames are guaranteed not to pull away from your home’s exterior because the thermal expansion rate closely mimics your building envelope. This means your windows won’t develop air and moisture leaks. And, you will never have to resurface your window frames to maintain a beautiful finish.
