Hung windows are those that open by sliding up and down within the frame. There are two types of hung windows: single-hung and double-hung. Both consist of two panes of glass. In a single-hung window, the top pane is fixed in place, and the bottom pane slides upward to open the window. In a double-hung window, both the top and bottom sashes slide within the frame.
Double-hung windows have become very popular in recent years, but you’ll still see some single-hung windows on older Michigan homes. Some replacement window companies still offer single-hung windows, too. Is this the best window style for your home? In most cases, you’re better off with double-hung windows than with single-hung. But here’s a closer look at this window style.
Single hung windows only open from the bottom.
Since the upper sash is fixed within the frame, the only way to open a single-hung window is to pull the bottom sash upward. For people with pets and children, this can be a drawback. The low location of the window opening makes it easy for pets and children to fall through.
If you have kids or pets, a double-hung window might be a better choice since you can slide the top pane down to open it in a safer way. On the other hand, if you don’t have kids or pets or you rarely open your windows, you might be okay with a single-hung option.
Single hung windows are common in older homes.
There are a lot of older homes in Michigan, and many of them still have their original single-hung windows. If you have single-hung windows, take a close look at them to assess their condition. Are the frames starting to peel or crack? Do the windows still lock properly? Do you feel a chilly draft coming in from around the window? These are all signs that your single-pane windows are failing. Consider replacing them with new, double-hung replacement windows for greater efficiency, comfort, and convenience.
Single hung windows can be tough to clean.
Another downfall of single-hung windows is that it can be tough to clean the top window pane. Since it is fixed in the frame, the only way to clean the outside of that top pane is from the outside. On a single-story home, this may just be a minor inconvenience, but on a two-story home, it can be a big struggle. You will have to climb a ladder or hire a professional to clean them. Modern, double-hung windows, on the other hand, are designed to be easy to clean. Both panes fold inward so you can clean the outside from inside your home.
Single hung windows are cheaper for a reason.
Some replacement window companies still offer single-hung windows, and some homeowners still buy them because they tend to be cheap. However, they are cheap for a reason. They’re not as safe, as easy to maintain, or as functional as double-hung windows. You’re generally better off spending a bit more for double-hung replacement windows.
