One of the great things about replacement windows from Renewal by Andersen is the fact that they are easy to maintain. Fibrex®, from which these windows are made, does not require stripping and painting like old wooden windows did. It’s resistant to warping, so you won’t have to worry about water leaks and mold growth.
Andersen windows are low-maintenance, but they do require some basic upkeep. The following are helpful tips for maintaining the windows in your Cincinnati home.
Vacuum Your Windows
A good way to remove dust and dirt from the cracks and crevices along your window is with a vacuum cleaner. Put a wand attachment on the vacuum, and run it along the seams and edges. If you do this every couple of weeks, you should not end up with substantial dust buildup.
Clean Fibrex With Soap and Water
A couple of times per year, you will want to do a more thorough cleaning of the window frames. To remove dust and dirt from the surface of your Fibrex window frames and sashes, use a basic mixture of soap and water. Dish soap works really well. Make sure you use a gentle, non-abrasive cloth or sponge to wipe the windows down with this soap mixture.
Wipe Glass With a Lint-Free Cloth
Most conventional window cleaners are perfectly okay to use on Renewal by Andersen window glass. However, if you prefer a more natural approach, you can certainly use a mixture of white vinegar and water instead. What’s more important is that you use a lint-free cloth to wipe down the windows. Don’t use paper towels; they will leave paper residue behind that may make your windows look even dirtier! The best time to clean the glass portion of your windows is when the window is not in direct sunlight. Sun can dry the cleaner prematurely, leading to streaks. Of course, this applies to all windows — not just Andersen windows.
Remove Screens to Clean Them
Insect screens are easy to remove from Andersen windows, and they are easiest to clean after you remove them, especially if they are TruScene® screens. Just take the screens outside, give them a shake, and then wipe them down with a damp, soft cloth. Let the screen dry, and then pop it back into place. Clean the screens in your Cincinnati home once or twice a year to keep the view through them clear.
Remove Grilles to Clean Them
Renewal by Andersen windows come with a wide range of grille options. You can remove the grille by lifting each leg of the grille away from the window glass. Removing the grilles makes it easier to clean the window glass, and it also makes it easier to remove the grilles. You can wipe them down with soap and water, let them dry, and then re-insert them.
Paint and Stain Carefully
Fibrex windows do not require painting or staining. However, you can paint the windows, if you so choose, in order to change their appearance. If you choose to do so, make sure you first apply a high-quality alkyd primer, followed by a high-quality oil or water-based paint. Use a foam or nylon brush for best results. Before you decide to paint or stain your windows, make sure to check your warranty so as not to void it.
