Is the thought of a costly heating bill keeping you up at night?
Fear not, for the good folks at the Michigan Public Service Commission are saying, “Relax, get some sleep.” Well, not really…but here’s the message they are spreading this fall: Michigan residents will likely catch a break when it comes to heating their homes this winter. The MPSC says people in Michigan will probably paying less in home heating expenses this year.
Some of this is contingent on Mother Nature. It stands to reason if we have a few days with the type of temperatures Michigan had back on February 9th, 1934 (the coldest day recorded in the state’s history), then you might need to crank up the thermostat. We’ll see. The MPSC says Michigan’s mild summer and a decreased demand for energy will mean a greater supply of resources this winter.
Another reason for the projected cost break? The MPSC projects residential natural gas prices this winter will average about 6% less than last winter. The majority of homes in Michigan use natural gas for heat.
These warm thoughts for Michigan stand in contrast to the cold, hard numbers delivered last month by the federal government in regards to heating costs for the U.S. this winter.
Outside of Michigan, natural gas customers are expected to an increase in natural gas prices. Propane and electricity prices are also expected to rise.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. If you haven’t done so already, think about investing in energy-efficient windows and doors. They will save you money, and they look great. There is still time to have them installed before the holidays. This will allow you to show them off to family and friends that visit during the holiday season. Energy efficient doors and window will be a benefit to your home in any and all seasons.
