Advanced planning and immediate warnings from smoke alarms—these will ensure the safety of your family in the event of a fire in your home. In making an escape plan, it is important to keep certain things in mind. Renewal by Andersen® of Long Island, your local source of windows and doors, explains them below.
Smoke Alarms
Investing in smoke alarms allows you and your other family members to respond to the emergency quickly. They must be installed inside and outside of sleeping rooms and every level of the home. The National Fire Code requires them to be interconnected, so they all go off when one sounds the alarm.
Walk Through Your Home
In planning your basic home fire escape plan, be sure that you have your entire family with you. Inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Draw a diagram of your plan if needed, especially if you have children. Mark the location of each smoke alarm, as well as the two ways out of each room, including windows and patio doors. Make sure that these can be opened easily and clear of any obstructions.
Choose Your Outdoor Meeting Place
Decide on a place outside your home where everyone can meet once you’ve escaped the fire. It could be near a light post, a neighbor’s home or a mailbox. Be sure that it is a safe distance away your home. Mark it in your escape plan diagram as well.
Test Out Your Escape Plan
Conduct a home fire drill with your family at least twice a year. Make it as realistic as possible. Get your children to master the escape plan, as well.
