Putting your Christmas tree in your front window lets it be a part of both your indoor Christmas decorations and your outdoor Christmas display. It also lets you show off your Christmas tree to your neighbors and anyone else that passes by your home, instead of being the only ones to ever enjoy your Christmas tree during the holiday.
But a Christmas tree in the window also comes with its own special set of risks that you have to be careful with.
Decorating a Christmas Tree in a Window
Here are a handful of safety tips to keep you safe with having your Christmas tree in the window:
- Never use anything other than a ladder to hang higher ornaments. You don’t want to be up on something unstable and have to hard brace yourself against your window. This is just asking for a broken window and a serious injury.
- If you have a low front window, don’t let your Christmas presents be seen. Thieves are always looking for an easy hit, and Christmas gifts in a window will give them exactly that.
- Don’t put the Christmas tree in a window where there is a heater vent.
- Don’t put your Christmas tree in a window if you are in a warm climate and the window gets a lot of hot sun during the day.
- Never use candles on your Christmas tree, and never, ever, ever use candles on a Christmas tree in a window. Light a candle on a flammable tree with a window treatment over the flame and you might as well call the fire department as soon as the candle is lit.
- Never flock your tree after it is put up in your window, only flock your tree outdoors.
General Christmas Tree Safety
- Choose a Christmas tree that is still holding on to its needles, and whose branches are flexible and green inside still. If you gently flex a branch and it easily snaps off, look for another tree.
- Always keep your tree watered
- Use indoor only lights on your tree
- Never leave the lights on your tree on after you have gone to bed or have left the house for the night.
- Consider buying a fake tree to decrease the chance of a fire.
As long as you think safety you will enjoy a wonderful holiday season with your Christmas tree in the window this year.
