Fixing windows around your home may have popped up on your to-do list over the spring and summer. But with the nice weather the to-do list sometimes gets pushed to the side and replaced with activities that are more fun.
With the summer drawing to an end here soon, it is time to get those windows fixed before the cooler weather returns and it is too late. Fixing windows now will prevent additional weather related damage and will allow you to enjoy the comfort of your home more once the winter gets here.
Fixing Windows Where there are Gaps
Gaps in your windows allow cold air to get in during the winter, which is why it is important to get them fixed before winter comes around again.
You can fix these gaps by removing the interior trim and use spray foam where there are gaps between the framing and the window jam. The spray foam will provide an excellent seal to keep the cold air out.
You can also use calking to seal any gaps in the trim in the inside and outside of your home.
Fixing Windows at the Screen
If you are faced with just small holes in your window screens, you can repair them. How they can be repaired will depend on the type of screen you have. You can use epoxy to fix metal screens, Super Glue for nylon or fiberglass screens, or you can purchase a screen patching kit at the hardware store.
Anything beyond small holes in the screen or damage to the frame itself will require a replacement screen instead.
Fixing Windows with Paint
While painting is not really fixing windows, it will sure make them look a lot better. Scraping and sanding the old paint off, and putting a fresh coat of paint on can make your house look years younger.
It will also give you a chance to change up the color if you are tired of the color the windows used to be. Changing windows from plain white to a colored trim will make them stand out and draw attention to your home. It is even effective in drawing people’s attention away from unattractive parts of the home, like an ugly door or broken fence.
Assistance in Fixing Windows
If you know that your windows need to be fixed, but are not sure where to start, there is help available. Employees at local hardware stores can usually explain what supplies you need and how to use them.
YouTube is also a wonderful resource. There are many professionals that use YouTube to post marketing videos for their businesses that walk you through each step of how to repair a problem.
However, if you think an issue with your windows is beyond repair it may be time to just replace them. Here at Renewal by Andersen, we are more than happy to come out and asses a problem you are having. We will give you our honest opinion as to whether the window or screen needs to be replaced or if a professional that specializes in fixing windows can correct the problem.
