If you are shopping around for windows for your new home or getting replacement windows for your existing home, then you’ve probably considered getting vinyl windows. After all, they are relatively inexpensive, widely available and easy to install. There are, however, some downsides when it comes to vinyl windows. In today’s post, we list three of the most common ones.
1. Warping
In areas where there are dramatic changes in temperature, vinyl may not be the most optimal choice as it can be prone to warping. Even when not exposed to extreme temperatures, the constant cycle of contraction and expansion can interfere with the mechanisms in your vinyl windows, making them difficult or even impossible to operate.
2. Relatively Short Life Span
Like most other things, vinyl windows are great when they are brand new. However, compared to wood or other common window materials, vinyl windows have a relatively short lifespan and may need to be replaced after about eight to ten years. Window replacements are a significant investment so selecting windows made from a more durable material may cost more upfront but can save you a lot of money in the long term.
3. Less Window Area
As mentioned above, vinyl is not the most durable material. To compensate for this, manufacturers have to use more vinyl to ensure that it is strong enough to hold the glass and this results in less viewing area. Less glass means less natural lighting which can affect the mood and ambiance of your interior space.
Fibrex® is a composite material developed by the Andersen Corporation in 1992. It combines the durability of wood and the easy-to-maintain characteristics of vinyl. Fibrex performs well against wood, aluminum, fiberglass and especially well against vinyl. It is heat-resistant, which expands and contracts very little and so can be produced in dark colors not possible with vinyl.
