Make Keeping Up with Window Care a New Year’s Resolution

The new year is nearly here! If you haven’t made your New Year’s resolutions yet, now is a good time to start thinking about how you will handle window care in 2021. Windows need regular maintenance in order to look and perform their best year after year. If your windows are relatively new, the most maintenance they’ll need is regular cleaning. If your windows are older, they likely need some TLC to keep going. Here’s what we suggest.

#1. Clean Your Windows Regularly

Cleaning windows is good for your home’s appearance, indoors and out. Clean windows on the outside add to your home’s curb appeal, while clean windows on the inside make the rooms of your home brighter and more cheerful. To clean your windows, use the commercial window cleaner of your choice, or a homemade cleaner made from vinegar, water and a dab of dish soap.

  • Wipe down windows first to remove grit and grime, before spraying your windows with window cleaner.
  • Use different rags between the inside and outside, to avoid bringing dirt and bird fecal matter (ick!) into your home.
  • Clean your windows every 4 to 6 months for best results.

#2. Perform Regular Window Maintenance

Older windows need periodic maintenance. Repairing your windows and protecting them from the elements can help them last longer. Below is the kind of window maintenance you should be performing on a regular basis.

Paint All Wooden Framed Windows

Wooden windows need to be painted or stained and sealed to protect them from moisture that can rot the wood. If the seal around your wooden windows is cracked, bubbling or peeling, take time in 2021 to have them scraped, sanded and repainted. Older windows may have lead-based paint, so hire a contractor who has expertise and is appropriately qualified to identify and deal with these problems.

Weather Strip Your Windows

Weather stripping can help keep your home warm and comfortable throughout the long winter and summer. Older weather stripping wears and breaks down over time. If your windows have older weather stripping, check it for cracks, gaps and missing strips. If you’ve never weather stripped the windows in your home, now is the time! This is an easy home improvement that can improve your home’s energy efficiency.

Fix Foggy Windows

Dual pane windows have an air- or gas-filled vacuum space in between panes. The purpose of the space is to provide insulation that serves as a buffer between outside temperatures (hot and cold) and the inside of your home. When the seal around the windows breaks down, that air or gas escapes and allows moisture to enter that space, creating a foggy, misty veil that reduces energy efficiency and makes looking out the window difficult. The only way to remove the fog is to have your window fixed by a professional. If many of your windows are having the same problem, 2021 may be the year to replace your windows. The problem will only continue to get worse.

Get Windows Replaced, If Needed

Windows only last so long. If your windows are hard to open and close, hard to maintain and don’t work as well as they used to, then 2021 is a fantastic year to get new windows.
