Choosing the frame material for window replacement was traditionally a balancing act between the pros and cons and choosing either wood, vinyl, or fiberglass. This limitation is what led Andersen Corporation, our parent windows company, to develop Fibrex®.
In the following video, our own Carl Isaacs shares with Brian Gurry from American Builder what makes Fibrex material the best window frame material in the market.
A Quick History
Fibrex was developed to address the need for a material that combines the benefits of the best window replacement materials, as homeowners didn’t have the option to mix and match features. Andersen Corporation started their research in the late 1950s. Over the years, materials such as vinyl, wood, and aluminum were tested until, after trying different composites made from reclaimed wood fibers and polymers, the Fibrex material was patented in 1991.
Why Choose Fibrex Material?
It’s strong – In tests, Fibrex is twice as strong as vinyl. Made from a combination of wood fibers and polymer, it’s impact-resistant and can withstand alternating hot and cold external temperatures. The wood fiber content eliminates any brittleness: in fact, Fibrex is guaranteed not to crack, pit, corrode, or rot.
It’s beautiful – Fibrex can also hold deeper surface details without introducing weak points that could start cracks. This lets us manufacture realistic wood grain textures that look better than any fiberglass frame. The interior wood finish options are also stainable, making it easier for your Renewal by Andersen windows contractor to match your existing trim and furniture.
It’s energy-efficient – This material has insulative properties on par with wood frames. Combined with our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass options, Renewal by Andersen replacement windows feature superior energy efficiency that helps you reduce your monthly energy consumption.
It needs little maintenance – Fibrex is equivalent to vinyl frames when it comes to low maintenance: all you need is a garden hose to clean it. Our windows also have easy maintenance features, like our double hung windows with sashes that can be tilted inwards.
It’s sustainable – Andersen Corporation, and by extension Renewal by Andersen, is committed to manufacturing replacement windows and patio doors from sustainable sources. The Fibrex material is no exception. It contains up to 40% of reclaimed wood fiber by weight, reclaimed from Andersen Corporation’s wood window manufacturing facilities.
