Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget to Clean Window Frames

Spring cleaning time is here! When you’re cleaning your windows, don’t forget to clean the window frames. By keeping the window frames clean, you can keep your windows looking sharp and well-maintained for years to come. Cleaning your window frames also makes it easier to identify problems like mold growth and window leaks, so you can make repairs or determine if it’s time to replace those old shabby windows.

General Window Frame Cleaning

Dampen a microfiber cloth with a mild cleaner (dish soap in warm water should do). Wipe down the window sill with the mild cleaner, then dry the window sill with a dry microfiber cloth.

Why use microfiber? It’s exceptionally soft, and it’s also good at lifting dirt out of crevices. If you don’t have microfiber cloths on hand, you can use any rag, terry cloth towel, or paper towels, you just might have to work a little harder to catch all the dirt.

Mold Removal on Your Window Frames

If you see you have mold or mildew on your window frames, you can clean this with a vinegar and water solution. Just combine water and vinegar in equal parts and stir. Spray this mixture onto any moldy areas on the window frame, then use a soft scrub brush, old toothbrush or a sponge to scrub away the mold. Take care on natural wood window frames – don’t scrub too hard, or you may scratch the finish and give yourself more work to do.

Mold could be an indication that your windows are leaking. Excess moisture can cause water damage, including staining, mildew and more. If mold growth is a common problem on your window frames, ask yourself why. Have your windows inspected by a professional to determine whether your windows are in poor condition and in need of repair or replacement.

Cleaning Your Window Tracks

The tracks of your windows, particularly on sliding or gliding windows, can trap a bit of dirt. To clean these, start by using a vacuum to remove debris like dirt and dead bugs. Next, sprinkle baking soda onto the tracks. Pour vinegar into the tracks and allow the mixture of baking soda and vinegar to sit for about 10 minutes. Wipe up the remaining liquid with a dry cloth and rinse well.

To get rid of any remaining debris, wrap a cloth around a skewer and use the skewer to push the cloth into the crevices of the window sill. Lifting the cloth, you should find that the debris is attached to the cloth. Repeat as needed until the tracks are fully clean.

Replace Your Windows with Low-Maintenance Fibrex Material Framed Windows

Wood window frames in particular can be high-maintenance. In fact, to protect and preserve them, wood window frames need to be refinished and repainted on a regular basis – in addition to the spring cleaning routine described above.
