Casement Windows or Double Hung Windows – Which Is Best?

Two of the most popular window types sold to homeowners on Long Island are casement windows and double hung windows. Casement windows open with a turn crank, while double hung windows open and close by sliding up and down on a track. Which one is right for you? In this article, we’ll go over the pros and cons of each type of window so you can decide which window is best for your home.

Casement Windows Pros & Cons

One of the features that stands out about casement windows is that they’re easy to open. Each casement window features a turn crank that can open or close the window, depending on which direction it’s being turned. There’s no lifting or pulling required to open or close this window, and no reaching for top-level window sashes either, so just about anyone can use a casement window if they need to.

Casements open and close on a hinge on the side, similar to a door. This means that it’s possible to fully open the window for maximum air flow or just a little for less ventilation. If you use your windows for air flow and would like to be able to open your windows fully, casement windows are for you.

There aren’t many downsides to casement windows, but if you would like to install a window air conditioner in your home, take a look at double or single hung windows.

Double Hung Window Pros & Cons

Double hung windows have two movable sashes that slide up and down on a track. Since the upper sash and lower sash are both capable of moving, you can adjust your double hung windows to get as much air flow going through your home as possible. Double hung windows from Renewal by Andersen of Long Island also tilt inward for easy cleaning, which is particularly useful on second-story windows.

Wondering what the cons are to double hung windows? Unlike casements, you can’t open these windows fully. No matter how you reposition the sashes, at least half of the window will always be closed.
