The Most Common Patio Door Myths, Debunked

Patio doors have been around for centuries, and are fast becoming commonplace in new homes, yet a few myths persist. In today’s post, patio door and window replacement company Renewal by Andersen® of New Jersey shares and debunks some of the most common myths about patio doors.

Most Common Patio Door Myths

Patio Doors Compromise Privacy

Many people are under the impression that because patio doors are more glass than frame, they allow anyone to casually peer into your home. This is false right off the bat because they’re patio doors; they are not supposed to be seen from the curb. Sometimes a patio door might give the next-door neighbor a view of your home’s interiors, but this is where window treatments are ideal. Both patio door styles work with blinds, shades and various types of treatments.

Patio Doors Cause High Energy Bills

There is some truth to this myth, in that patio doors were built using single pane glass. This was before nearly every sliding window and patio door featured insulated or double pane glass. The problem with single pane glass is its natural conductivity, which means it facilitates thermal transfer that allows heat loss during winter and heat gain during summer. As heating and cooling systems increase their output to compensate for the temperature difference, they consume more energy.

Today’s patio doors are different. Our High Performance™ Low-E4® glass, a standard component of our replacement windows and patio doors, feature double-pane glass. By eliminating contact between interior and exterior surfaces, it dramatically reduces heat conduction, which ultimately results in high energy savings. All of our products are certified by ENERGY STAR®.

Patio Doors Are Not Secure

Early patio doors weren’t exactly on par with entry doors when it comes to security: they typically came with hardware designed for single-sash doors. Today’s patio doors have come a long way, thanks to innovations in door hardware by various manufacturers. Our French doors feature a multi-point locking system that distributes resistance across multiple bolts, while our sliding patio doors feature reach-out locks that secure the door sash sideways. Additionally, laminate glass options offer enhanced protection against shattering.
