3 Signs Your Windows Are Damaging Your Home

Old, poorly maintained windows can cause many problems for you and your home. They often don’t look good, but worse than that: they can even cause damage and devalue your home. If you’re a homeowner with old windows, you should be aware of the signs that your windows are causing damage to, and devaluing, your property. Knowing these signs can help you decide when it’s time to get your windows repaired or if it’s time for replacement. Here’s what to watch for.

#1. Windows that Cause Fading Flooring & Furnishings

Single pane windows and older windows are notorious for allowing excessive UV rays into your home, which can cause fading to your flooring, uphostery and furnishings. Look for fading color on the backs of your chairs, sofa, on hardwood floors and on carpeting near windows. UV rays are damaging in more ways than one: they also cause your floors and upholstery to deteriorate, which can become expensive over time.

#2. Window Glass Feels Hot in Summer, Cold in Winter

Even on energy efficient windows, the glass will become warm in the heat of summer, and cool in the chill of winter. However, if your windows are especially energy inefficient, you’ll notice that the glass on the inside of the windows may become frosted or frozen in winter, and in summer, the glass may become very hot to touch.

The surface of the window glass with its fluctuating temperature is placing a burden on your home’s HVAC system, causing it to run harder and longer than necessary to keep your home a comfortable temperature throughout the year. This could run down your air conditioner or furnace, and may lead to expensive HVAC repairs over time.

#3. Window Frames Stained

One more sign that your windows are damaging your home? Stained window frames and window sills are an indication that your home’s windows are leaking, or could be an indication that condensation gathering on the window glass is accumulating on the wooden frames, which can lead to mold, mildew and rot. You could end up replacing a lot of wood over time.
